Cosmetic Surgery Quick Facts 2017
According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, more than 1.5 million surgical cosmetic procedures were performed in 2018. Over 3.2 million nonsurgical cosmetic procedures, led by injectables, were performed in that year.

2017 Cosmetic Surgery Highlights
- Surgical procedures accounted for 77% of the total expenditures in 2017 and nonsurgical procedures accounted for 23%.
- Surgical procedures were up 11% in 2017. The surgical procedures that saw the most significant increases include Eyelid Surgery, Buttock Augmentation, Fat Transfer to the Face, Facelifts, Neck Lifts and Upper Arm Lifts.
- Nonsurgical procedures were up 4.2% in 2017. The nonsurgical procedures that saw the most significant increases in 2017 include Micro-Ablative Skin Resurfacing, Full Field Ablative Skin Resurfacing, Nonsurgical Fat Reduction, Chemical Peel and Nonsurgical Skin Tightening.
- Injectables overall saw a 5.1% increase in 2017 and a massive 40.6% increase over the past 5 years.
- Labiaplasty has increased by 217.3% over the past 5 years, but saw a 10.7% decrease in the number of procedures performed in 2017.
- Patients aged 35–50 had the largest percentage of surgical procedures performed (38.6%).
- For all breast explantation (removal of existing breast implants) procedures performed in 2017, patients opted for:
- 67% had implants removed and replaced with new implants
- 18.3% had implants removed without further surgical intervention
- 11.9% involved a breast lift once the implants had been removed
- 2.3% involved fat grafting to increase volume following implant removal but no new implants or lift
