Cosmetic Surgery Quick Facts 2011
According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, almost 9.2 million cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures were performed in the United States in 2011. Breast augmentation is the most popular surgical cosmetic procedure for women and the second most popular overall, with more than 316,000 procedures performed.

2011 Cosmetic Surgery Highlights
- From 2010-2011, there was almost an increase of almost 1% in the total number of cosmetic surgical procedures, with more than 1.6 million surgical procedures performed in 2011.
- Surgical procedures accounted for 18% of procedures, while nonsurgical procedures made up 82% of the total number of procedures.
- Since 1997, there has been an increase of more than 197% in the total number of cosmetic procedures. Surgical procedures have increased by more than 73%, and nonsurgical procedures have increased by 356%.
- 316,848 Breast Augmentation procedures were performed in 2011, making it the top cosmetic surgical procedure for women.
- Americans spent nearly $10 billion on cosmetic procedures in 2011.
- People ages 35-50 had the most procedures with more than 4 million and 43% of the total. People ages 19-34 had 20% of procedures, ages 51-64 had 28%, ages 65 and over had 8%, and ages 18 and younger had 1.4%.
- Where cosmetic surgeries were performed: office facility 60%, free-standing surgicenter 22%, hospital 18%.
